Formal Methods and Networking: Former Success, Current Failure

In the 1980s the primary networks were circuit-switched. These networks were public utilities operated as monopolies. As we all know, circuit-switched networks have been largely replaced by packet-switched networks. Public utilities have been replaced by a highly competitive marketplace. An older generation of engineers has been replaced by a new one, and the appreciation of formal methods has disappeared.
